Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)

Description: Led by a dual-credentialed BCBA and School Psychologist, this process ensures that every assessment decision is thoughtful, family-centered, and aimed at supporting long-term well-being and meaningful participation for the learner.

Process:
  1. Define the Purpose & Prioritize the Learner’s Needs
    • Goal: Understand the learner in context, not just the behavior.
  2. Build a Full Picture Through Collaboration
    • Families are the learner’s lifelong advocates, our first and most important partners.
  3. Define & Describe Target Behaviors
    • Clarifying behavior helps us support, not label, the learner.
  4. Conduct Observations in Natural Settings
    • Both behavioral and psychological lenses are used to understand context, motivation, and impact.
  5. Analyze Data to Identify the Function
    • The goal is not just to reduce behavior but to teach skills that improve the learner’s quality of life.
  6. Identify Environmental & Instructional Strategies
    • Adjusting the environment is just as important as teaching the learner new skills.
  7. Write Up the FBA and Summarize Behavior Findings
    • Our write-up keeps the learner’s dignity at the forefront and ensures the entire team is aligned on how to best support meaningful progress.
  8. Share Results & Collaborate on Next Steps
    • Work with the family and team to understand the assessment results and collaborate to develop programming and behavior support plans.
