Relationship & Sexuality Education

We provide comprehensive sexual health education to individuals with I/DD, Down syndrome, or complex communication needs individually and in groups, both virtually and in-person, depending on individual needs and availability.

Older Teen Program (Ages 15-17)

Description:

Designed for teens with Down syndrome or other I/DD, this program provides a deeper understanding of puberty, sexuality, identity, communication, and relationships using a medically accurate, developmentally appropriate framework adapted from the Elevatus curriculum. Families receive tools and language to support ongoing learning and conversations. Topics include relationships, boundaries, decision-making, communication, online safety, and abuse prevention.

Individual Program:
- An individualized and tailored teaching approach to implementing this program to individuals and their families. Sessions can be provided in-person or virtually (depending on availability and individualized needs). **10 sessions minimum required for the individual program
- Rates: Rates may vary depending on the type, location, timelines for services, hours required, and materials. Rates for individual sexuality education services range from $125/hour to $155/hour. Please inquire with admin@bookwormedpsych.com for more information.
- Payment Options: California Self-Determination Program funding (331- Puberty Education Support; 331- Sexuality & Relationship Coaching; 331- Parent Coaching), Regional Center Funding (102- Sexuality Education), or private pay (payment plans available upon request).
Group Program:
- A great way for individuals and parents/caregivers to learn this alongside their peers. This group program is composed of 4 (1-hour) student sessions and 4 (1-hour parent/caregiver sessions).
  - Group Offerings:

Adult Program (Ages 18+)

Description:

This program supports adults and romantic partners with I/DD in developing knowledge and skills related to relationships, sexuality, sexual health, and boundaries. Content is individualized, strengths-based, and adapted from the Elevatus framework, emphasizing informed decision-making, communication, and safety. Topics include intimacy, sexual health, relationships, pregnancy prevention, STI awareness, and abuse prevention.

Pre-Teen/ Early Teen Program (Ages 10-14)

Description:

This program supports youth with Down syndrome or other intellectual/developmental disabilities in understanding puberty, body changes, boundaries, and early relationships in a factual, medically accurate, and developmentally appropriate way. Instruction focuses on “need-to-know” information aligned with physical age and includes family guidance to support conversations at home and coordination with school. Topics include public vs. private behavior, body parts and privacy, puberty, boundaries, mental wellness, crushes, and abuse prevention.
